Privacy Policy

Vital Tails ("we," "our," or "us") respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how the Vital Tails mobile application ("the App") handles information when you use it.


1. Information We Collect

Vital Tails is designed to be local-first. The vast majority of data stays on your device and is not transmitted to our servers. However, certain features rely on third-party services that process limited information, described below.

a. Pet Information (Stored Locally Only)

When you use the App, you may enter:

  • Pet names, species, breed, age, weight
  • Health logs, medications, vaccines, appointments, reminders
  • Walk history and activity data
  • Meal and diet entries
  • Veterinary contact information

This information is stored locally on your device only and is never transmitted to our servers or any third party.


b. Photos (Camera / Media Access)

The App may request access to:

  • Your camera (to take pet photos)
  • Your photo library (to select existing images)

Photos you choose are stored only on your device and are not uploaded or shared by Vital Tails.


c. Location Information

Vital Tails may request location access for features such as:

  • Finding nearby veterinary clinics, pet groomers, sitters, walkers, and related local services
  • Tracking walks (distance and route)

Location data:

  • Is used only while the feature is active
  • Is stored locally on your device for walk history
  • Is not shared, sold, or transmitted to our servers
  • For local-business search, the App queries OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service to find nearby businesses; only the geographic search area is transmitted, not your identity

d. Subscription & Purchase Information

If you subscribe to Vital Tails Premium, payment processing is handled by Google Play Billing and subscription status is managed via RevenueCat, a third-party service.

  • Google Play Billing receives your payment information directly; we never see your credit card details.
  • RevenueCat receives an anonymized user identifier and your subscription status (active, expired, canceled). This is used solely to manage your premium entitlement within the App.
  • RevenueCat does not receive any pet data, health data, or other personal information from the App.

e. Notifications

The App uses notifications to remind you of pet appointments, scheduled reminders, and daily routines.

  • To deliver notifications, the App registers a push token with Expo's notification service. This token is a unique device identifier; it is not tied to your name, email, or any pet information.
  • Notification content (such as reminder text, pet name, appointment time) is generated locally on your device.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the limited information that does leave your device solely to:

  • Provide pet tracking and health management features
  • Manage your premium subscription (if applicable)
  • Deliver scheduled reminders and notifications

We do not:

  • Sell your data
  • Share your data with advertisers
  • Collect analytics tied to your identity beyond what is required for subscription management
  • Require user accounts or logins for the App itself

3. Data Storage & Security

  • All primary app data is stored locally on your device
  • Subscription data and push tokens that leave the device are transmitted using HTTPS encryption
  • You can export your data at any time using the in-app export feature
  • We do not maintain a centralized database of pet or health data

4. Third-Party Services

Vital Tails uses the following third-party services:

  • Google Play Billing — processes subscription payments
  • RevenueCat — manages subscription state and entitlements
  • Expo Notifications — delivers scheduled push notifications
  • OpenStreetMap (Nominatim) — provides nearby-business search results
  • Google Maps — displays maps and routes during walk tracking
  • System map applications (e.g., Google Maps, Apple Maps) — opens when you choose to view a location
  • Operating system services — camera, media library, location, notifications

Each third-party service operates under its own privacy policy.


5. Children's Privacy

Vital Tails is not directed toward children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information through the App, please contact us and we will take steps to delete it.


6. Your Choices

You can:

  • Deny camera, photo, location, or notification permissions in device settings
  • Export your local data using the in-app export feature
  • Uninstall the App at any time, which removes all locally stored data
  • Cancel your subscription at any time via Google Play

7. Data Deletion Requests

To request deletion of any data we hold about you (such as RevenueCat subscription records or Expo push tokens), email Max.casteel@sunriverconsulting.us with the subject line "Data Deletion Request."

We will:

  • Respond to your request within 7 days
  • Complete deletion within 30 days
  • Confirm completion via email reply

Note that uninstalling the App removes all locally stored pet and health data immediately, but does not automatically delete subscription records held by RevenueCat or push tokens held by Expo. Email us as described above to request deletion of these.


8. California Residents (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, to request deletion of your information, and to opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information. To exercise your rights under the CCPA, email us at the address in Section 9.


9. European Economic Area Residents (GDPR)

If you are in the European Economic Area, you have the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your personal data, as well as the right to data portability. To exercise these rights, email us at the address below. We will respond within 30 days. Our lawful basis for processing the limited data described in this policy is the performance of a contract (providing the App) and your consent (for optional features like notifications).


10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Updates will be reflected on this page with a revised "Last updated" date. Material changes will be communicated through the App where reasonably possible.
